Northumberland Street
A full restoration of a Georgian apartment
The client felt that the atmosphere had left the space; our task was to bring that back.
Brief
Georgian houses have a very benign, strong presence. Unfortunately, many of these buildings have been unsympathetically altered over the years. They include modern amenities and poor quality solutions, which jar with the building’s heritage. This was the case with this beautiful, ground-floor apartment on Northumberland Street in Edinburgh’s New Town. The client’s brief was to combine a modern way of living with period elegance.
Execution
To reinstate better flow throughout the apartment, our team removed a series of walls and repositioned numerous doorways. We added a new kitchen and bespoke wetroom; the latter offers all the essentials in one, confined space.
In an attempt to reintroduce the property to the period in which it was from, we consulted neighbouring properties. These properties, with their original features intact, served as our template for this restoration. Our team created profiles of the skirting boards, architraves and other mouldings and created exact replicas. You’d never know that these hadn’t been there all along. We re-plastered the walls and ceilings; the ornate cornicing throughout the apartment was re-cast and fitted to match the existing design. We also replaced the window shutters.
The apartment was tastefully redecorated in a classic colour scheme in order to celebrate the original features and proportions of the rooms.
Testimonial
“BANN are a really good company who delivered the project on time, despite factors beyond our control. I was impressed with the quality of work and the ability to find creative solutions. I’m delighted with the final result. All those working for BANN really knew their jobs and were also very nice and cooperative when discussing matters with us and our neighbours.
I have employed various building firms in the past, but BANN is excellent by comparison. I would certainly use them again, and often recommend them to friends.”
